Our History
Champions for Camden Families, formerly known as Compassion for Camden, was founded during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. In response to a growing crisis of homelessness, we launched our initiative by transforming Yorkship Family School in Camden into a temporary shelter. During this time, we provided critical support to those in need, including food, clothing, hygiene essentials, work IDs, and access to job interviews. Our outreach also helped several individuals enter recovery programs for addiction.
As the pandemic eased and traditional shelters reopened, our temporary housing efforts came to a close. However, the need for sustained support in our community remained.
In the winter of 2024, the Camden City Mayor’s Office recognized the impact of our work and encouraged us to establish ourselves as a formal nonprofit organization. We embraced this next step, and on April 9, 2025, we officially became Champions for Camden Families.
Founded and led by a team of veteran educators, we have firsthand experience with the daily struggles faced by Camden families. Our mission is rooted in empathy, action, and a deep commitment to lasting change. As we move forward, we remain dedicated to uplifting and empowering the families of Camden with compassion, dignity, and unwavering support.
